The first thing to do if you see your dog sick is to see a Vet immediately. The Vet should do a checkup and recommend ways to give proper care. With careful observations, treatment can be done at home but in case of anything, the attention of a Vet is required. There are several ways to make your dog feel comfortable like using cbd oil for dogs. Here are some tips on taking care of a sick dog:
Limit Playtime
Rest is important for your dog, you should make sure you restrict how much exercise and playtime he gets. Taking him out on a leash is necessary but don’t allow him too much play. Playtime should not be the same as it was when he wasn’t sick.
Playing for too long will leave your pet more exhausted and vulnerable which could only make the condition worse. There should be a balance between the amount of time the pet spends immobile and the time spent playing. A dog parent has the responsibility to be strict but it can be overwhelming when your pet is sick.
Track The Bathroom’s Needs
It is the responsibility of the dog owner to track the bathroom’s habits especially. When he is sick, there’s a likelihood he will feel exhausted to go to the restroom. Make sure you change his bedding daily the dog’s body will probably be filled with feces and urine. Clean his body regularly at least twice a day if you spot any waste on his body. Be gentle on the dog, don’t yell or punish him.
It might be a cause of stress making him delay the recovery. You can construct an indoor toilet temporarily for your dog to cater to his needs while sick. Monitoring the bathroom behaviors will help you pay attention to the stool and urine output. Be easy on your dog if it goes to the bathroom in a different place.
Monitor the Daily Activities
Note down when your dog has different symptoms, when he eats, drinks, plays, or goes to the bathroom. It will help your veterinarian to diagnose the illness and find possible solutions. If you monitor severe symptoms such as bleeding, broken bones, breathing difficulties, vomiting, diarrhea, unable to urinate, swelling, etc.
Call your vet immediately if the symptoms become extremely uncomfortable for the dog. Your dog should not be punished if they change their behaviors. Monitor the symptoms closely and do not leave your dog on his own. If you need to leave, have someone check on the dog at least every 2 hours.
Check The Dog’s Diet
At the time your dog is sick, he is sensitive to every type of food. Feeding him something too heavy on the stomach will make him feel worse. For the first 24 hours, you should withhold all food especially if your pet is suffering from nausea or diarrhea. Always remember to keep your dog hydrated when they are sick.
Keep a bowl full of water within his reach. When you see your dog behaving normally, you can introduce a bland diet for one to two days. Include proteins in the diet like cottage, chicken, or boiled hamburger. Feed your dog with one cup daily and split into 4 servings of 6 hours apart.
